This is one fantastic business! They are thoroughly professional as well as honest.
Mark the owner is absolutely helpful.
I love this place great service good selection of vacuum bags always has fixed my vacuum perfectly! Can't give it a better rating
Pro/Straight Shooter
Mark did a great job repairing my Hoover electric cord. Meeting his golden Dakota was a bonus. :D
They are really good with cleaning and maintenance for any vacuuming machines Ive owned. Have been coming for years.
We had our vacuum repaired. Friendly and fast. Plus they have a super sweet dog.
Friendly, efficient, helpful, knows what hes talking about. And Dakota the golden retriever is a sweetheart. Only hiccup is the parking. But I will go back again without question.
Great service and fair prices. Fixed up my Shark vacuum like new. Santa Monica institution, and just a fun shop to go into.
Very nice people, excellent service, they fixed a vacuum cleaner that I had no hope for.
Amazing. He fixed my vacuum without directions
Very nice people, excellent service, they fixed a vacuum cleaner that I had no hope for.
Wow I cant even tell you what they did for me (and on my first visit)because it is to much for you to expect.Best service ever from anyone by far!

Took vacuum in because it had been reported that I was not working. A large dog greeted me when I came in with gruff barks and a tennis ball in its mouth. He didn’t want to play but to show me his tennis ball. Cute.
Mark plugged vacuum in and guess what, it worked fine and he showed me what was wrong. A ‘switch’ was in the wrong position. He then showed me some safety features on the vacuum that I needed to know.
While he could have charged me for his time and expertise, he did not however he will be top of my list when I need repairs.
I went to him for the service based on online reviews and he matched that quality with his service to me.
Great service and fair prices. 15 year old Dyson Vacuum good as new. Highly recommend if you'd rather fix your vacuum versus landfilling it.
Took my Dyson vacuum in after it stopped working. The power cord needed to be replaced and was done in a few days for a very reasonable price. Picked it up and the gentleman at the counter carrier it to my car for me! Great, fast, reasonably priced service!
Why haven't I been here years before this ? Mark makes you believe in Mom, apple pie and everything good in this world. Exaggeration? NO!!! I have now had so many things repaired here, and I always get a straight answer. Mark has repaired my electrolux vacuum and has given me honest information on repairs versus new purchases.( Early on,I triple checked everything he said....now, I just believe what he says- it saves me so much research time). He has repaired and rewired lamps, and I feel secure with his work- nothing worse than having questionable electrical work done. I hope he decides to stay in business forever .
Called about getting my Dyson V6 repaired and wanted to confirm they serviced this brand / model. Not only were they very friendly, they took the time to understand what the issue might be and recommended a remedy that i could handle myself. In the end, i fixed the problem myself but valued their customer service and helpfulness. I will definitely be coming back for any future needs we have. Thank you the help!
Honest shop owner with the best 96lbs Golden baby to make your day. Give them a visit, you won't be disappointed!
Based on the reviews I took my 2 not working Meile vacuums to Smith & Lee. They were very nice and told me it would take a couple days. The following day they called and had fixed my vacuums. 1 the motor on the canister had to be cleaned and they replace both filters. The second one an upright had a pen stuck in the wand. Both are working great and I'd refer them to anyone with vacuum issues and they were fairly priced for the service.
Had a minor problem with a clogged vacuum and Mark was able to take care of it in no time. Very friendly and informative man. Will definitely be coming back to this business. Highly recommend coming here. Also has the friendliest golden retriever to greet you when you walk in.
I went here to have my shark vacuum repaired. Unfortunately, the man behind the desk said that the repair wasn't worth the value of the vacuum. He told me I was better off buying a new vacuum. I appreciate his honesty and although wasn't able to give him business this time, I will be back in the future.
Just got home from Smith & Lee. Had I known it would be so wonderful I'd've gone 3 months ago when my Miele Olympus canister vac stopped sucking well even after I changed the bag & shoved a stake down the hose. No improvement.
So today after yelping, I was off to Smith & Lee. Mark picked up the handle, detached the wand (long metal tube that attaches to the hose), held it up to his eye like a sailor with a telescope, and said, "I don't see daylight." A minute later, he'd sucked out the obstruction & said, "There you go." Yeah, I felt incredibly stupid for checking the hose but not the tube, but Mark's demeanor never changed.
Bonus: He didn't charge me, AND he insisted on carrying it out to my car. I'll definitely go back to Smith & Lee in the future.
Well that Lady runs a tight ship and keeps things ship shape, so when the Dyson went down I was instructed to replace or repair. Being frugal and realizing that was most likely a broken power cord I opted for repair. Taking it in to Smith & Lee was a pleasure. Turned out the owner is a car guy, so I got to spend some sweet time talking cars. A few days later I got the pleasure of a return trip as the part was in and replaced. I was greeted by the owner and man's best friend. Well a little more car talk and some dog talk. All this place needs is a pot belly stove, Cracker Barrel, a deck of cards, coffee machine (they repair) and the men will come flocking with repairable items. I already planning my next trip as I have a table lamp for re-wiring (they also repair same). Who needs a Man Cave!
Extremely helpful both times I've been in with my ancient vacuum. Each time, got it working again and charged me less than $5!!! Of course, he also keeps warning me that once the motor is gone, I'll have to buy a new one (they no longer make parts...)
Quickly repaired my Singer sewing machine at no cost...it was a small fix but I was pleased with the service!
In our first two visits to Smith & Lee, they provided fast repair service for super reasonable prices. Today on our 3rd visit, Mark saved our family several hundred dollars when he could have easily charged us for an expensive repair. This is the kind of honesty and service I appreciate in a local business.
Wonderful local place! My Dyson was fix and cleaned like new. He even added a new attachment I had lost. Thanks again! Will always return. The big sweet golden retriever is always a nice hello too :)
Amazing service. Amazing guy. Amazing dog. Serviced my kenmore canister hose. He fully serviced in 24 hours.
I am a total rookie when it comes to sewing, so when the used machine I just got as a gift was not working, I brought it in for repair. It turns out it was just some little lever that was out of place, so the shop owner just smiled and showed me what was wrong. He could have easily fooled me and taken the machine in for repair and charged me some money, but he was honest and did the right thing. And besides, he has the sweetest dog in the shop who greet you when you walk in the door :) We need more businesses like this one!!
I had what I considered a minor repair to make on my vacuum cleaner (a belt replacement which I can do myself and one other item which I could not figure out). I went to three vacuum repair places (one on SM blvd near Smith and Lee and a company on Lincoln Blvd. in Venice). Both of the latter places were completely lackadaisical about fixing my machine or giving me an estimate. Newman's wanted 10 dollars for a belt. Then I visited Smith and Lee Vacuum. I don't know the name of the fellow who helped me (he was the only person in the shop) but I suppose he must have been in his mid-sixties since he was reading Kieth Richard's autobiography and he told me that he used to go to concerts by the Stones when they played at small clubs and were essentially a garage band. He was a nice looking fellow and did not look like an old guy despite his age. He let me show him the problem, sold me a belt for $3.50 and told me that it would work and I shouldn't worry about the other problem. He was right. My impression with regard to other shops is that they are like car repair shops. They want you to leave your vacuum so that they can give you a big estimate and try to get as much money as they can from you. I was beginning to give up on getting my vacuum fixed until I went to Smith and Lee. The fellow there was a real nice guy, very helpful and I didn't get ripped off as I would have been at the 2 other shops I visited. I wish I had asked for his name.
Gotto love them! Fair prices, prompt, friendly, honest...and they charge half of what George's and Neumans' and other vacuum repair shops charged me. (And he has a cool dog that greets you at the door.) Gotto love them!
Mark the owner was great. I called around to georges and smith & lee when my mile vac stopped working (already had been overcharged for services in past at brentwood and newmanns). He did the service for a third of the price as the other guys and replaced the cord for $65. Great service and great prices. I grew up on the westside and have finally found a reasonable repair shop!!
One never knows if its worth fixing the vacuum cleaner or just getting a new one.....AND this is what I love about Smith and Lee , you can rely on the information, whether its worth fixing your vacuum or buying a new one. I love their no-nonsense approach. I fully had expected to let my vacuum cleaner die and all it needed was a thorough cleaning and a new belt, and I had it back in 1 day!! Happy to have found a trustworthy place to take my vacuum and steamer. In this economy, it's a delight to deal with a shop that offers both excellent service at fair & reasonable pricing. I highly recommend Smith and Lee!!
Great place! I had a broken vacuum belt he only charged me 5 dollars for the belt and nothing for the service. He was also really fast, it only took a few minutes to do. Highly recommend! One thing is if you don't carry cash on you there is a 10 dollar minimal on credit cards.
Had the best experience here. He ran into a lot of problems with my vacuum and didn't extra charge me. Was super friendly and helpful
The nicest, most honest owner, the best dog to play with while you wait. What more can you ask for?
Mark is amazing! He walked me through the nightmarish process of replacing a broken steam cleaner that was irreparable. The company fought the warranty fine print and dragged their feet and Mark helped me through it all. I cannot more highly recommend a business. If you need a vacuum repaired or want to replace or buy a new or refurbished one, look no further.
Great customer service, honest. I highly recommend this repair shop and will certainly be back if my equipment needs repair again.
I called mark monday to come do some maintenance on my inhouse vacuum system. He was SO nice and so efficient coming today. He reviewed the whole system and fixed what needed to be.. .did not overcharge me and helped save me money in the end!
Mark did such a wonderful job fixing my beloved 65 year old Singer Featherweight sewing machine after I had pretty much given up hope of ever being able to use it again. What a joy to have it humming along .I trust him absolutely! He has told me honestly when something is not worth fixing. In addition he is a super nice guy and a mine of information so you will enjoy your visit !
Went in with my Hoover upright that I'd purchased from Home Depot. Mark at Smith & Lee looked at it and fixed it in under two minutes. This was particularly impressive given that Home Depot couldn't fix it and Hoover's customer service didn't even call me back. Smith and Lee also had tons of parts and accessories. LOVE this place.
This place is the best for repairs. Polite and helpful. I entered in the hope that they could repair my bread maker. I was told that they don't usually repair bread makers but maybe he could help. 5 days later it's working beautifully.
I entered Smith & Lee very upset and looking for some help. I couldn't have asked for better service from them.
found this shop through the manufacturer. I've gone back every time I've needed any type of service or part because the owner is knowledgeable, experienced & fair. He always delivers when he promises; there are no surprises & he always works through any problem one presents. The shop is not much to look at, but the service is the kind you wish you could find everywhere!
I only needed a simple repair on my vacuum and it was taken care for me immediately. Haven't had any extensive service done here, but I would confidently come back for more services, if needed.
This place was great! Took a vacuum in on Saturday, it was done Tuesday morning. Parking in the back, friendly service, and the owners very sweet Labrador retriever to keep you company.. What more can you ask?
I highly recommend this shop for vacum repair. It is a friendly shop that appears to be run by the owner. There is no intimidation factor nor any attempt to convince you to pay more than is necessary to accomodate the repair.
Parking is easy- free parking in the rear or plenty of meter parking.
It's nice to go to a shop where the owner waits on you and does excellent work.
I highly recommned this shop for vacum repair!
Smith & Lee is truly a "throw-back" to the good old days. When you could walk in, talk to a knowledgable person, and get honest service. That's been my experience with this shop.
My mom has an older but very expensive Electrolux vacuum. It has lots of automated features and simply stopped working recently. I took it down and dropped it at Smith & Lee, as my mom said she'd been doing business there for years. I was amazed to speak with the person who would actually do the repair! The next day I received a call saying it was finished. I expected well over a hundred dollars for the repair, but it was under fifty! AND he had cleaned the whole thing up beautifully. Not long after that, my son was playing with the vacuum and crushed the original hose, housing the electronics that run the light and brushes in the nozzle. One call to Smith & Lee, and I found that they no longer produce the original fabric covered hose but he had a replacement hose in stock. No problem!
While I was there I picked up a new bag-less shop vac from his on floor stock of new and used vacuums. Great deal too. Vacuums are a small specialty, why would you want to go anywhere else when you can find an expert? I see some whiners on this site, I suggest they look for personal service at Best Buy or Costco. Smith & Lee's products may SUCK, but the service ROCKS.
In search of the gems out there that have gone unreviewed, I rediscovered an old favorite that was first established in 1927 when vacuums and sewing machines were much more prevalent in our society.
When your little sucker stops sucking, Smith & Lee will revive its lungs to near new condition. Mark, the owner, takes great pride in providing a honest, competent, on-time service for your vacuum and sewing machine woes.
I don't think they will work on Husbands or Wives, but he can also work on wiring related issues for lamps, etc and can work on some small appliance issues. But the great thing about them is that they will tell you if it is even worth fixing. In our throw away society, Mark will tell you beforehand if it would be cheaper to just buy a new one. Yes, it is true, Mark won't sucker you.
In the search of finding lost treasure, Smith & Lee has been a find !
A throw back to the good old days of great service. Found this place by chance while driving down Santa Monica Blvd. Next day brought my broken down vacuum cleaner with me on my way to work. The salesman told me what was needed to get my vacuum back in shape in a clear and precise manner, gave me an estimate, said that if he had all the parts on hand that he would have it ready for me by the time I got off work. Stopped by after work it was ready for me plus it cost me less than the estimate given or way below the price of buying a new vacuum.
One other thing the salesman has the nicest & friendliest dog you'd ever want to meet.
My dealings were like dealing with a mom & pop business where a real person answers the phone and gives you a straight forward honest answer.
Will come highly recommended to anyone who asks.
My Hoover upright broke. Mark was totally honest and also helped me work with the manufacturer to save me some dosh. I would recommend this repair shop to anyone, everyone! That says a lot coming from me w/all the bad experiences I've had in this area. THESE GUYS ARE GREAT!
Wish I could do 4 1/2 stars instead because of the lame location and general unfriendliness of Santa Monica, but then this place's review rating might slip and that wouldn't be a good thing.
Unassuming shop (like most repair places) and the parking is Santa Monica horrible .... HOWEVER the service has been great, and that's what's important!
The repairman (owner?) is super nice, grabbed my vacuum on the spot opened it up and saw what was wrong. It was a warranty repair so he said he'll request the part and call me. A few weeks later (not his fault - the vacuum company is just lame) he got my replacement unit and called me to pick it up.
Friendly disposition, great service, and let's you know what's up up front. Those are unfortunately rarities these days. If you need an appliance repaired - stop by!
Dropped off Miele stick vacuum. They promised to stay open so i could make it in on time. Next day got a call from Mark - the vac's motor was gone, and here commended it wouldn't be worth it to repair it. Disposed of the vac for me, and didn't want payment when I offered.
I have been going to Smith and Lee for many years now.
Whether it is the simple things like the vacuum bags or replacement of my vacuum, the service here has been great! It's always a pleasure to go in this store and get what I need, along with the personable service that is provided!
I took my Brother sewing machine in (that hasn't been working since before Christmas) and the nice gentleman behind the counter hooked it up, and viola`, it works! 5 minutes and no charge later I waled out a very happy camper - and a customer for life!
I was out of town visiting, when my sisters vacuum broke and I got on line and found Smith & Lee. I went to the store with my sister and was prepared to have to buy a new one but to my surprise I was told by the repair man their her could fix it for a very reasonable price. I am extremely happy with everything I have experienced in this store has been awesome! Thank you for saving my sisters vacuum! I was very happy with my experience there.
We have gone to Mark for years for all our vacuum repairs and needs. Mark is honest and does a great job! He is always straight forward telling us if we need a new vacuum or if he can repair it. We will continue to go here!
I bought an upright vacuum cleaner from Smith and Lee a while back, and I have been extremely happy with the level of expert service that Mark provides. He is a really nice person who tries to help do whatever he can to make your vacuum purchasing experience pleasant. Several times, I have had to go to the store for one reason or another because I needed a part or just wanted to ask him some questions with regard to the operating of the vacuum. He is so knowledgeable and goes out of his way to help. He is honest and did a little tweak for me and sent me on my way.
I highly recommend this shop if you need to purchase a vacuum or simply have one repaired. I travel quite a distance to go to Smith and Lee even though I have several shops within my area that I could frequent if I so desired.
I just love great service and Mark provides that!!
This really is as good as it gets. Certainly as far as getting your vacuum repaired goes. Our vacuum starting shutting off after just 5 minutes of use. Took it in to Mark at Smith & Lee. He did several tests on it, while I was there and over the weekend. And didn't grumble when it seemed to be fine and I said things like "But I swear it turns off when I try it!" He believed me. Turns out, our vacuum's motor was shot. It's not a new vacuum, so it wasn't worth it to fix. But Mark refused to charge me for any of the time it took to diagnose the problem. Nice, clean store. The kind of place that would feel right at home in Mayberry. Happy to recommend Smith and & Lee.
These guys are the best. Honest people - isn't that what you want when you bring a busted vacuum to the experts? You need someone to tell you if your machine is salvageable or not. We brought an old office vacuum in and were told - no can do, can't be fixed. We weren't charged a dime for the man's time. I respect that. That good customer service.
I would give this place six stars if I could. Brought in our 3 y/o Hoover which was still under warranty. Mark, the owner/technician replaced the handle which contains the main control mechanism. Same problem continued and after additional unsuccessful repair attempts Mark appealed to Hoover who agreed to replace our vacuum with a new one.
As one reviewer inferred, Smith & Lee (Mark) is like a small neighborhood shop that treats to his customers in a friendly personal manner and ensures customer satisfaction.
Not sure who I like better, Mark or his terrific dog Charlie who is worth visiting even if you vacuum is working fine.
